G. MICHELMORE & CO.
at the Earl’s house in Drury Lane with Robert Earl of Elgin and John
Ashburnham of Ashburnham Sussex, to perfect the bond for /5000.
Other letters for payments from the Duke’s money follow, one
payment being to Thos. Rogers “ Apholsterer.” Asks for his
evidence concerning Belchington (the Earl’s seat in Oxfordshire).
“ . . . They were disordered in the time of The Fire of London.”
About Clayton’s promise that if the Earl would stay his suit, the
forge and lands at Camolin (Ireland) should be delivered to him
peacefully, and arrears paid. Now possession has been denied
him. He will proceed with the suit unless delivery is immediately
given to Cornet Wolseley. Etc.
*** The Earl sat in the Long Parliament and was sent to Ireland
under the Great Seal, to prevent Ormonde joining with the Scotch
forces under Monroe at Ulster. His success led to Dublin surrender-
ing to Parliament. In the settlement of Ireland at the Restoration
Anglesey’s services were often sought and liberally rewarded. He
became Vice-Treasurer and Receiver-General for Ireland, and is
noted as perhaps the first peer to devote time and money to the
formation of a great library.
