This volume of Greek Treatises is quite remarkable. Every
Treatise in it is rare, and Nos. 4, 7, 8, g, exceptionally so.
The best known of the five printers is Andreas Wechhel, and short
accounts of all are in Jean de la Caille’s Histoire de I.Tmprimcrie
(Paris, 1869); but none of the contents of this volume are there
mentioned.
Formerly the property of the Minimite Friars of Laon (cf. “ e
musaeo minimit Laudum ” on title), early owners were “ Doulcet ”
(16th cent.) and Pierre de Martigny, whose autograph signatures
occur in the volume.
149 GWYNN (Nell). D.s : “ E. G.,” April 1684. 1 p.
folio. Acknowledging £500 towards the support of
HERSELF AND HER SON BY CHARLES II, “ CHARLES EARL
of Burford now Duke of St Albans.” Endorsed:
“ To Mrs Ellinor Gwynn 500 pounds.” £140
.. A very precious State Paper. Charles Il’s World-famous
Mistress was unable to write more than her signature “ E. G.”
This she was able to do by the aid of dots placed for her guidance.
Obviously she signed very few documents, and no letters of hers
exist. Cunningham, in his Story of Nell Gwynn, states that not
. more than a dozen signatures are known.
150 HAKEWILL (George). An Apologie or Declaration of
the Power and Providence of God in the Government of

One of the vignettes on the engraved title is a ship in sail and
another shows whales swimming.
