I will complete this discussion by stating the provenance of the drawing of
Tiepolo. Its former owner was the Spanish artist Raimondo de Madrazo, whose
grandfather was an intimate friend of Goya, and whose family possessed drawings
by Tiepolo and Guardi as well as by Goya. One of the drawings of this collection
(it has now passed into other hands) is a fascinating landscape by Guardi, enclosed
in black and white arabesque work, which almost betrays Tiepolesque influence.
Postscriptum. I take this opportunity of bringing to the notice of your readers an
important new work on G. B. Tiepolo, just published, which cannot fail to be of deep interest,
as its author is the eminent historian of Venice, Sig. Pompeo Molmenti, to whose fruitful
collaboration with the late Dr. Gustav Ludwig the world already owes the standard book on
Carpaccio. —
