CHAPTER XXIII.

EXPEDITION TO BBANCHIDJE.

"Visit to Branchidoe in the " Supply ;" notice of Branchidae in the
" Ionian Antiquities ;" statues in the Sacred Way; character
of the site; description of the several figures; inscriptions;
second visit to Branehida? in 1858 ; removal of the statues ;
excavations on the Sacred Way ; tombs ; inscription by sons of
Anaximander ; probable date of the Branchidie statues ; their
Egyptian character; early connection of Ionia with Egypt;
tradition respecting Theodoros and Telekles.

In October 1857, the " Supply" having to proceed
to Malta, I took advantage of that opportunity of
visiting Geronta near Miletus, the site of the
ancient Branchidrc, celebrated for its Temple and
Oracle of Apollo Didyrneus.

My principal object in tins excursion Avas to
obtain photographs and drawings of certain archaic
statues still remaining at the side of the Sacred
Way which anciently led up to the Temple.

I therefore took with me Corporal Spademan,
li.E., and the photographic apparatus, and having
been landed by the " Supply" in the island of Ca-
lymnos, which lies opposite to Geronta, I crossed
over in a Greek vessel which was most kindly lent
to me for tins purpose by Mr. Antonio Maille, a
Greek merchant residing at Calymnos.
