NEW INFORMATION ON FINDS OF ROMAN COINS...
The ongoing recording of Roman Republican coins found in Ukraine began
in 2012 and is associated with the project mentioned earlier but also the project
“Coins of the Roman Republic in Central Europę”, of which Dr Kyrylo Myzgin
was a participant. The records being made mainly focused on new finds, and this
led to some unexpected results. Up until 2012, the literaturę dedicated to our region
of interest only mentioned three single finds and a hoard, the latter made up of
35 coins,10 but now the number of Republican coin finds from Lviv District is no less
than 72 single finds and four hoards (consisting altogether of 73 coins), for a total of
145 coins.* 11 Of this number, no less than 29 single finds lack a precise provenance,
since the only information we have is that they come from Lviv District. There is
a clearly identifiable concentration of Republican coin finds within a fairly small
territory - in the central area of Zolochiv Region in Lviv District - mainly near
the villages of Pochapy, Bonishyn, Knyazhe, and Chervone. Even if this information
comes - for the most part - from Internet sources or from Anders’ (treasure hunters’)
reports, still, we succeeded in obtaining information on a substantial number of these
finds. We now have a record of at least 39 finds of Republican denarii and their
imitations, from single finds and four hoards (Pochapy 1-35 specimens; Pochapy II
-9 specimens; Chervone -18 specimens; and Bonishyn -14 specimens).12 The total
number of coins recovered from this small area, including coins from hoards,
comprises 115 specimens. In comparison, the records regarding the rest of the lands
that now belong to Ukraine include no less than 159 coin finds (official and imitative),
including a hoard of 28 Republican denarii. Thus, the finds from just Zolochiv
Region make up no less than 42% of the total number of Republican coin finds
from Ukraine (the corresponding value for the whole of Lviv District is 69%).13
In general, finds of Roman Republican coins in Lviv District - both single finds
and those belonging to hoards - are denarii of official status, dating to the early
2nd Century BC to the second half of the lst Century BC, with the overwhelming
majority of the coins dating to the late 2nd to the first half or middle of the 1st Century
BC. In their chronological structure, all of the “Zolochiv” hoards are virtually
identical to the known Dacian hoards, most of which come from Romanian finds.
Imitations, of which the total number of finds from Lviv District is no less than 35
(with 18 of the coins belonging to hoards and 17 to single finds) are all, without
exception, Geto-Dacian types, with prototypes minted from between the mid-2nd
to the mid-lst Century BC. The two circumstances described above - the similarity
