Home-Made Counterfeits of the Tymfs (złotówki)
of John II Casimir (1648-1668) from Finds
in the Historical Region of Volhynia

ABSTRACT: The paper presents information on a number of home-made
counterfeits of the 30-groszy coins (tymfy, złotówki) of King John II Casimir (1648-
1668) found in the historical region of Volhynia. Detailed descriptions of the coins
(Figs. 1-7) are accompanied by an analysis of the technology of their production.

ABSTRAKT: Fałszerstwa tymfów Jana IIKazimierza (1648-1668) ze znałezisk
z terenu historycznego Wołynia
W artykule omówione zostały fałszerstwa monet o nominale 30 groszy (tymfy,
złotówki) znalezione na terenie Wołynia i wybite według pierwowzoru monet króla
Jana Kazimierza (1648-1668). Szczegółowy opis monet (il. 1-7) uzupełnia analiza
technologii ich produkcji.

The forgery of coins has always been a very profitable and advantageous
occupation. It likely appeared soon after humans invented the very first coin. This
type of economic crime consisted in the production and sale, on the monetary
market, of coins illegally madę in underground workshops by persons having no
minting rights. The high risk of severe punishments for the forgery did not usually
deter the coin counterfeiters.
Home-made counterfeits were madę in order to be spent on a money market in
exchange for goods and Services. The aim of this paper is to present information on
a number of counterfeits of tymfs found in the historical region of Volhynia, including
