ABSTRACT: The Hoard of Forged Coins ofKing Władysław Jagiełło, Found
at Lutsk
One of the extraordinary donations that has recently enriched the collection
of the Numismatic Cabinet is the gift received from Mr. Zbysław Kałkowski. He
handed over a part (around VT) of the unique find of medieval counterfeit coins
in the amount of 915 pieces. It was found in Lutsk (present-day Ukraine) during
the Second World War. We have no information on what may have happened to
the remaining parts of this deposit. To datę, the pieces that comprise the hoard have
not been described or inventoried, while the hoard itself has been mentioned only
in several publications. It is reported to have originally consisted of c. 3,100 coins:
3,000 trzeciak (ternarius) coins ofKing Władysław Jagiełło (1386-1434) and c. 100
pennies (denarii) of the same ruler, all minted in the early years of his reign as King of
Poland. A numismatic analysis of the material under consideration has demonstrated
the presence of two types of forged pennies. In the case of minor kwartnik (denarii
quartenses) coins, the examination has distinguished the combinations of three
obverse types (shield with a double cross and a surround inscription) with two
reverse types (eagle image with surround inscriptions). Foliowing the coin die
combinations, five variations of forged minor kwartnik coins have been singled
out. There are some indications that the forgers’ mint was established somewhere
in the borderland, perhaps even at Lutsk, while the hoard may be datable to the late
14* Century.
KEY WORDS: hoard of Lutsk, forged (counterfeit) coins, minor kwartnik
coins, trzeciak coins, pennies (denarii), Władysław Jagiełło
