CHEMICAL AND MINERALOGICAL COMPOSITION
OF ROMAN AMPHORAE FROM NOYAE AND SOME
OTHER SITES IN BUŁGARIA — FIRST RESULTS

I. Introduction

Excavations at the Roman castrum of Novae on the river Danube in Bułgaria,
among other local and imported pottery, yielded a large series of fragments of
amphorae for winę, oil and garum. Most of the fragments did not bear stamps, so their
archaeological attribution is based on shape alone. To get a morę generał view on
the imports of amphorae in the region regarded here finds from four other sites in
Bułgaria were included in the study. Forty-six samples from Novae, eight from
Kavarna, five from Varna, two from Sozopol and one sample from Kamen Briag were
selected for łaboratory analysis. Seven samples of fine wares, found in Novae and
probably produced within this region, were studied for comparison with the amphorae
of the Butovo type which were thought to have been produced there, too. These and
the amphorae sampies from Bulgarian sites were selected for analysis by P. Dyczek
of the Center for Archaeological Research Warsaw University. Łaboratory analysis
of this selection was carried out by M. Daszkiewicz, E. Bobryk and G. Schneider as
part of a project directed by P. Dyczek and financed by Poland’s Committee for
Scientific Research. The aim of the project was to conduct a study of amphorae sherds
from for the excavations at Novae, comparing them with those recovered from
underwater investigations in the Bulgarian Black Sea littoral. For further comparison,
eight samples of amphorae ofZeesttypes found in Tanais, Russia, were also analysed.
These were determined and kindly provided for analysis by B. Bóttger, German
Archaeological Institute, Berlin. A list of the samples, together with their inventory
numbers, types and discovery locations is given in table I.
Amphora sherds were found in Novae on the side of the Flavian legionary baths
and military hospital (valetudinarium), investigated by the Archaeological Research
Center of Warsaw University, and the scamnum tribunorum, explored by E. Genćeva
of the Institute of Archaeology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. It can thus
be assumed that the function of the buildings determined the rangę of storage vessel
types represented in both areas.
