DEIR EL-BAHARI
EGYPT
period in the history of excavations and
research in the Theban area [Fig. 14]. Having
become by sheer age a monument of Egypt’s
cultural heritage, it has come under
protection and conservation like the other,
more ancient monuments in Thebes.
The Polish Mission, which has occupied
the dig-house since 1961 by decision of the
then Egyptian Minister of Culture and
National Guidance Dr. Tharwat Okasha,
and Director of Egyptian Antiquities
Dr. Gamal ed-Din Mokhtar, has aggrandized
the structure (a room in the west wing
added on in the 1970s) and undertaken
more or less extensive renovation works
(including major rebuilding of the eastern
bathroom in 2004, project documentation
by T. Kaczor in the PCM A Archives)
required by the condition of the building
and its status as a historical monument.
