LN Amateur In art, ire commissioners Baphael to paint him a " mol/
Damil/," with Lt. ^olrn tire Baptist, tire patron saint of Florence.
lire inexhaustible genius of Baphael succeeded in imparting a
peculiar clrarm to tlris subject, which bas been so often repeated, b/
borrowing a little scene from domestic life. Dbe Virgin, standing, is
talcing tire Lbild from tire lrancls of Lt. UlliLabetlr; lre is tr/ing to spring
towards iris mother, but at tlrat moment a /oung rvoman behind Blira-
betlr touches him, and he is loolcing rouncl ancl smiling at her.
On account of a window in the background being coverecl with a
cloth, this picture bears the name of the " Madonna clell' Impannata." It
is now in the Bitti palace. Its authenticity has fre^uentl/ been doubted;
but the beauty of the composition, ancl a drawing b/ tire hand of
Raphael in the ro/al collection in Blngland, prove that the design is b/
the master, if not tire execution, in which much stiffness and inec^ualit/
nra)? be noticed. It was doubtless painted b/ one of his pupils. It was
some /ears later than the portrait of Bindo.
Amongst the Madonnas executed about 1512, is that of the Orleans
galler/, which has passed into tire galler/ of tire Dulce of Bridgwater.
Dire head of the Virgin, and the exquisite drawing of the Llrild from tire
shoulders to the feet, are especially admirable; it is a masterpiece of life
and grace.
More simple, but not less attractive, is a "Madonna" formerly at tire
Dempi house, and now in tire Binacotlrelc of Munich. Dire Virgin Iras a
touching expression of maternal happiness.
Dire poet, Lamuel Rogers/ in Dondon, possessed a small " Madonna,"
in wlriclr tire infant ^esus, standing on iris mother's lap, and leaning
against lrer, is loolcing smilingly out ok tire picture. Dlris painting, lilce
that in the Bridgwater gallery, came from tire Orleans gallery. It is a
good deal injured, unfortunately.
Dire Doi/ Damil/ which Baplrael painted for Dionello Bio da Larpi,
is, on the contrary, in excellent preservation. It is in tire Museum ok
Daples, with tire original cartoon. It was formed/ in the Darnese
Oaller/. Dire Virgin, and Lt. BllDabetlr, with their children, are seated
near a ruin. Dire little Lt. ^olrn is expressing his tender adoration for
^lesus, who, talcing his hand from that ok Lt. BllDabetlr, is blessing him.
