Bollowing tbe example ok 8eba.8ti2.no del Biombo, ik.apba.el proposed to deco-
rate tbs walls of tbis bail witb oil painting; and, baving prepared a general
drawing of tbe wbole conrpo8ition, be bad tbe bgures of justice and lVleskness, on
eitber side of tbe " Battle of Lonstantine," painted in b^ Oiulio Lonasons and
Brancesco Benni, under bis own superintendence. But bere deatb cut sbort bis
career, and bis two pupils, aided b/ Balaelle del Lolls and Oiovanni da Bions,
leaving untoucbed tbe knisbed figures, removed tbs prepared coating from tbe
rest of tbe wall, and completed tbe design in fresco.

tbe life of Lonstantine, adorn tbe walls of tbis ball: b^ tbe side of eacb picture a
pope is seated in a nicbs, surrounded b^ genii and allegorical spirits; above
smaller tlgures are represented, on pilasters—Apollo, tbe moon, bo^s and maidens
witb tbe ^oke emblematical of Beo X.; and below, caryatides witb tbe diamond
ring and otber s/mbols of tbe Nsdici surround compartments of various sires,
containing subjects from tbe life of Lonstantine, painted in yellow to imitate
bronre.

lbs Bmperor, standing on a platform on tbe lekt, witb a Boman captain
beside bim, is relating bis vision to four standard-bearers, wbo appear klled witb
entbusiasm at tbs recital. In tbe foreground is a guard, and at tbe feet of tbs
Bmperor are two /oung pages bolding bis weapons. In tbe distance we see tbs
apparition of tbs sbining cross witb tbe inscription, " LN rovio nikL" (" B^ tbis
sign tbou wilt conquer"). Beneatk it are tbe tents of tbe arm^, and tbe soldiers
burning to tell of tbs marvellous sigbt. Burtber back llows tbe Biber, and we
distinguisb several well-known monuments on its banks. Bbs deformed dwarf
on tbe rigbt in tbe foreground, was added b^ Oiuiio Bomano, at tbe request of
Idippol^te de' lVledici, to wbom tbe unfortunate creature belonged. Bbs pages
at tbe Bmperor's feet are also additions.

bills, witb lVlount jsaniculum and tbe Bonte lVlolls on tbe rigbt, form tbs back-
ground. In tbe centre of tbs picture Lonstantine is dasbing across tbs battle-
beld on a powerful wbite borse, witb bis spear levelled at blaxentius, wbo, witb
bis arm)q is driven back into tbe Biber. Bbres angels witb darning swords bover
above tbe Bmperor's bead, and proclaim tbe victory wbicb Ood bas given bim.
lVleanwbile tbe struggle is desperately maintained, altbougb tbs troops of Naxen-
tius are falling back in confusion before tbe cavalry of Lonstantine, and fugitives
are already burning across tbs bridge.
