zu St. Cassian nach einigen Petrefacten dem Muschelkalk zuschreibt,
könnte man ihn nach andern dem Uebergangsgebirge oder einem
Gliede der Oolithenperiode zurechnen, und eben so ist es mit den
übrigen Flözgebilden jener Gegend, Es bleibt nichts übrig, als
sie lediglich unter Berücksichtigung ihrer selbst zu classificiren, und
ihnen von dortigen Localitäten hergenommene Namen beizulegen.
Wir haben sie sämmtlich zwischen die zweite und dritte Periode
der Lethaea (das heisst in die Mitte des Flözgebilde) eingeordnet
aus keinem andern Grunde, als weil sie überhaupt Flözgebilde
sind; wir führen sie in derjenigen Folge auf, welche nach W iss-
mann ihre Lagerfolge von unten nach oben zu sein scheint. Es
bleibt 'eine grosse Aufgabe der Wissenschaft, solche grosse Ausnah-
men unter ihre zu erweiternden Regeln zu bringen.
Note. Representing here some secondary formations of the
South-East of Tyrol by a suite of their organic contenta, we do
remark, that we leave aside the attempts made at comparing these
formations with the series of normal rocks constant in England,
Germany, France etc. The investigations instituted in 1840 by
Wissmann have confirmed the assertion of Mr. Lommel, accor-
ding to which the (about 200) species of fossils (for the greatest
part never having been found beyond this locality) of the Alp near
St. Cassian in the Abteithal (a valley on the south of the Puster-
thal), which have been partly published by Count Munster in the
Journal published by von Leonhard and Bronn (1834) and which
are to be made in short time by Munster and Wissmann the
subject of a complete treatise, are to be found all in the very sa-
me calcareous clay in such a manner that they must have lived
there simultaneously. Should some species of the organic remains
refer this clay to the Muschelkalk, others will reclaim it to the
transition-formations or to any division of the oolite-series, and it
is quite the same with the other secondary formations of that coun-
try. Therefore they must be classified with regard only to them-
selves, and names must be given to them taken from Tyrolian lo-
calities. We have placed them all between the periods II and III
of the Lethaea, in the midst of the secondary formations; we dis-
pose them according to their succession in ascendant order, as
Wissmann found it suitable. There rests a great problem for
science, to make such grave exceptions subject to her more exten-
ded laws.
Note. En représentant ici quelques formations secondaires
de la partie S. E. du Tirol par une suite de leurs pétrifications,
nous ferons observer que nous laissons à part les essais faits pour
les comparer à la série des formations normales établie en France,
Allemagne, Angleterre etc. Les observations de Wissmann faites
