Meaning of the Verb snfr in the Building Records of the Thutmoside Period
When the author analysed the dedication formula
jr. n=f mnw=/he was trying to prove that its syntax
would stress the significance of the king’s activity
rather than any specific object of this activity.24 Some
scholars have already suggested an understanding of
the word mnw primarily as a royal act.25 Moreover,
one should note that the specification of the charac-
ter of the royal mnw in the dedication formula is gen-
erally expressed by an infinitive, not by a noun.
It may seem strange that the verb snfr never
occurs in the dedication formula. One should sug-
gest that formula which emphasises the king’s ac-
tivity is not a proper place for it. The only ruler that
may have his mnw snfr-ed is therefore the dead
king - the royal ancestor. The living ruler by the act
of snfr-ing makes the name of his predecessor ev-
erlasting in a perfect/completed - foundation. His
own activity, however, may by no means be con-
sidered completed.

formulaJr.n=fm mnw=f GM167 (1998), pp. 77-81. mmnwf, WZKM69 (1977), pp. 22,25.
