Between Centre and Periphery. Late Medieval Paintings
from the Church of St. Nicholas in Sząbruk, Warmia
The article addresses the issue of late Gothic wall paintings from the Parish Church
in Sząbruk, Warmia, created around 1500-1510, which have not yet been the subject
of an in-depth analysis. In the course of the research it was possible to verify the ico-
nography of the cycle, partially establish its graphic patterns, as well as to analyse its
provenance and determine its place in the regions late-mediaeval art. The paintings
show a Dutch influence, which had probably reached the province through Gdańsk. Its
mediation is also indicated by the scene of the Last Judgment referring to Memling's
composition. The time of the paintings execution indicates an early example of inspira-
tion from Gdańsk, since the influence of this artistic centre on the art of Warmia came
