times heighten, and at all times lower its
effe&s by art. It is, therefore, on a pro-
per attention to the beautiful, and the pic-
turefque, that the art of improving real
landfcapes muft depend.

As beauty is the moft pleafmg of all ideas
to the human mind, it is very natural that it
fbould bemoft foughtafter,andthat the name
fliould have been applied to every fpecies of

excelience.
