306 IX. PHRYGIAN CITIES ON PISIDIAN FRONTIER.

p. 170 and 1880 p. 293. eroDj njf1' Avp. Aloviktios bis MataXeibos 0ec3
Sco^oirt evxvv. Between the date and the name is a horseman in relief,
to right, with radiated head, holding a spear (?). The date seems not to
be reckoned by the Cibyratic era (giving a. d. 422-3), but by the Sullan,
giving a. d. 312. Many votive reliefs on the rocks at Tefeni and
Yuvalik (already described Ch. VIII §9), may be all taken as dedications
to the great god of the district; but the few inscriptions which accom-
pany them give little information to elucidate their meaning. The three
following alone could be deciphered.

104. (R. 1884). On the rocks at Tefeni: A. H. Smith no. 16 (with
date different). MeveXaos Mrivibos 6po<pvka{{;] zvyjjv erovs sop'. The
date is either a. d. 201 (reckoned from the Cibyratic era), or a. d. 91-2
(Lydo-Pkrygian era): the former is perhaps more probable. Perhaps we
should read 6po(pv\a[ia], understanding that a vow was made to the god
as guardian of boundaries and patron of the guards.

105. (R. 1884). On the rocks at Tefeni. A. II. Smith no. 17. "Etovs

is either 197 or 87-8 a.d.

The genitive of 'Ar-rijs varies, 'Arrrjbos (St. 53 B 26, C 34) and 'Atttj
(38 A 5). The same person appears with both spellings (38 A 5,
53 C a5) ' compare Neacabov, NeiKaSa, and NeixaSaSo?, Macro, Maadvros, and
Maaabos, Xdpnroj and Xaptjbos, &c. The name Kobellis also occurs in
St. 53 and 59 : it is perhaps connected with Ku/3e'A?j and Kvfieka 3. The
epithet einJKoos has an oriental character, but was widely used in Asia
Minor (see Waddington no. 1173 at Prusias4).
