1770 New York. „Nieüw Amsterdam / op’t Eylant Manhattans“. / View of New
Amsterdam that is New York over the Island of Manhattan (about the year
1650). Copperpläte-engraving by the well known Cartographer Nicolaus Jo-
annes Visscher of Amsterdam, about 1650—1656. Height 70 mm, width
310 mm. i6._
True reproduction of the first view of New York (at that time New-Amsterdam) as an en-
graving on copper. This view is undoubtedly in Position and every detail quite exact. It
shows us the metropolis as a small town with wooden houses. The explanations A—K in
the Dutch language show the Fort, the Church, the Windmill. Flag to haul up when ships
are coming into harbour, the Prison, the General’s house, the Law Courts, the Oven (= de
Kaeck), the Company’s Storehouse, the State Hotel. 100 copies of this view have been made
and printed on old paper similar to the original and( for this reason cannot be distinguished
from the original. 10 copies are very tastefully coloured in the style of the period. This
above view has been reproduced from a very rare engraving which is to be found engraved
on the map of John Nicolaus Visscher (the elder); „Novi Belgii / novaeque Angliae nec non /
partis I Virginiae tabula / multis in locis emendata a / Nicolao Joannis Visschero“ [.
Asher the celebrated Bibliographen remarks in his work on America that this map with the
view of Old New York is very rare. And as far as I am aware only one copy of this very
rare print has found its way on to the market for many years. A reproduction of this very
interesting view would be an addijion to the collection of many interested in old engravings
or in Old New York, the more so as this view is remarkable from the point of view of
decorative work.
