this material the area is so inadequate that a very
little push suffices to overturn them. Then, again,
that fanciful embellishment which is so often given
to wicker articles is out of keeping with the practical
purposes to which they are put. As our illustrations
show, they may be made sufficiently attractive in
appearance without such embellishment, which,
moreover, frequently militates against cleanliness.

MELBOURNE.—Holman Hunt’s large
replica of the Oxford canvas of The
Light of the World has recently been
on exhibition in Melbourne, and has
attracted considerable attention from the general
public—not, of course, on account of any artistic
qualities the picture may possess, but by reason of
