to apply the sculptor-potter’s art in a some-
what novel direction to an important
feature of the home, and is conceived in the
right spirit, taking its place in direct
association with, and not as an unessential
accessory to, the decorative furnishing of
the interior. Experimental applications of
this sort are of more value to the public
than objects, however beautiful, destined
only to occupy some selected position as
isolated units of aesthetic interest. 0
The metal-work shown in the exhibition
is, on the whole, satisfactory, although there
is, perhaps, too devoted an allegiance paid
to English eighteenth century models.
Attention is given to good and appropriate

shape as the first essential, with restrained
ornamentation directly related to the domi-
nant elements in the design and not a
superflous addition. This is a welcome
tendency when one recalls the “ repousse ”
period when a piece of copper, if sufficiently
bruised and battered, was accepted as the
hall mark of good taste and artistic dis-
cernment. One would like, however, to see
more evidence of personal inspiration, but
that will perhaps be forthcoming in due
course. One must confess that, if it were
not for the labels attached, these metal
objects might readily be taken, with few
exceptions, as the work of one craftsman.
Good as they are, there is little individual
