L.C.C. CENTRAL SCHOOOL

"JOCKEYS.” ETCHING BY F. WHITING
(L.C.C. CENTRAL SCHOOL OF ARTS
AND CRAFTS)

relation to furniture and decoration. The
work of men like Gimson seems to have
been in vain if the rising generation are to
be confined to well worn paths and any
instinct or capacity they possess for creative
work suppressed in their artistic infancy.
One appreciates the fact that these students
are being trained to earn a living and will,
no doubt, have to adapt themselves to the
demands of employers, but it is only by
sowing fertile seed when their minds are
receptive that one can hope for a future

harvest of progress and emancipation.
There is no desire to advocate any reckless
plunge into originality at any price, but
one feels that there is need of a clear and
definite policy in relation to decoration,
furniture and furnishing accessories, which,
while acknowledging the value and im-
portance of a thorough grounding in the
sound craftsmanship of the past, will yet
realise that art, whether applied or other-
wise, if it is to possess any vitality of interest
must be eternally changing and progressive.
