MILAN—MADRID

within ten days at most—I believe the
time was less—all these drawings were
sold at very good figures, one of them
being acquired by an English resident in
Milan, Mr. Moll; and their extraordinary
merit easily accounted for this result, 0
One of the most brilliant in colour and
handling was the Cornere dei Piccoli (“ The
Children’s Paper ”), which we reproduce
in this issue ; it will give some idea to our
readers of the fresh loose handling of
this artist, though, unfortunately, it cannot
convey the charm of its colour, deep, rich,
translucent—notably in the velvet dress of
the standing child—and handled with ex-
traordinary vivacity and daring. Looking
at these five drawings, which caught my
attention the moment I entered the room,

"THE CHILDREN'S NEWSPAPER”

BY VICENZO IROLLI
(First International Water-colour
Exhibition, Milan)

a comparison came to my mind which I
think may be suggestive to my readers, I
was forcibly reminded of the technique
of Antonio Mancini, of its vivacity, its
brilliance, its audacity, and I felt
that it might not even be perhaps too
much to call Irolli a modern Mancini,
using preferably this fascinating and
spontaneous medium of the art of
water-colour. S. B.

MADRID.—A vigorous and exceptional
personalityis revealed in the drawings
by the Spanish architect, Senor Luis
Menendez Pidal y Alvarex, which we re-
produce. These delightful designs for a
country house and a hotel are distinguished
and full of imagination. 0 0 0
