VIENNA—MOSCOW
VIENNA.—In times when so many
artists are endeavouring to convey
their thoughts through the medium of im-
pressionism it is salutary to remember
that the adherents to old causes are still
working and producing masterly results.
Such paintings as that of Rudolf Jettmar
which we reproduce can be made by no
other means than long and patient study
and practice of the art. The Fight for the
Bridge displays sound technical accom-
plishment ; as a strong imaginative hand-
ling of action it is deserving of high com-
mendation. a a 0 a 0
MOSCOW.—At a recent exhibition
dealing with army life an outstanding
feature was Vassili Iacovleff's The News-
paper at the Front—a simple scene devoid
of any theatrical pathos, yet wonderfully
“ alive ” with its splendidly modelled
soldier types and its masterpiece of still
life in the harness of the foreground. It
is a pity that the canvas throws a some-
what dull hue over the whole and that
it is rather reminiscent of the world-
renowned “ brown gravy ” so valiantly
fought against by former impressionists,
for Vassili Iacovleff (like his well-known
