TOKYO.—The second annual exhibi-
tion of the Todai Chosokai, an associa-
tion of sculptors, was recently held at the
Takenodai Building, Uyeno Park, Tokyo.
It embraced a wide variety of subjects in-
terestingly treated in bronze, plaster and
wood. The works revealed results of a
Zealous struggle now raging among young
sculptors of Nippon to produce something
worth while, something that will lead the
way for the strugglers in the dark. For,
indeed, as in other branches of art, dark-
ness still prevails in sculpture, though not
without some signs of approaching dawn.
To be sure, the members of the association
are not without competent leaders, as the
recent exhibition contained commendable
works by such artists of unusual ability
and established reputation as Asakura-
Fumio, Naito-Shin, Asakura-Uichiro, and

future of our glyptic art is deemed by

mode of expression. There is a strong
endeavour to be new, to break away from
the old tradition. The attainment of the
end is sought by two divergent methods ;
either by building on the old stock by
quickening it with a modern life, giving it
a new interpretation, or by a clean depar-
ture from the tradition in modes and
technique, a conscious deviation from the
