MODERN SWEDISH ARCHITECTURE

It would, moreover, scarcely be possible to
point to any edifice in our new art where
pure Swedish style is more pronounced.
Brick is also in this case the main material,
but it is coated with a thin wash. Limestone,
our cheapest natural stone, has been used for
plinths, mouldings, gable ends, etc., granite
for the main doorway only and a number
of decorative details. The roof is tiled, the
turret copper-covered. In the interior is to
be found sterling handicraft down to the
smallest detail. 0000
The Ostermalm School in Stockholm
(Fig. 3) erected by Ragnar Ostberg (born
1866) comes among the most cultivated
works in brick architecture. Classic calm,
ponderosity and impressiveness distinguish
the building. The wall surfaces are smooth,
entirely of hand-made brick without
pattern or ornament. The roof is stepped,
tiled and unbroken. The main wall, with

its flue openings, is carried up over the end,
thereby avoiding the disturbing effect of
a number of chimney stacks on the
profile. 00000

Erik Lallerstedt (born 1864), both
through his activities as a teacher and his
large output, has long worked for a personal
and rational style. His greatest achieve-
ment is the Technical College of Stockholm
(Fig. 2), which is still not quite completed.
The problem of this vast block of buildings
is solved by the grouping of the bulks
round several large court-yards, terraced
according to the formation of the ground
and beautifully planted, giving to the more
prosaic utility-buildings a contrasting and
refreshing vein of poetry. 000
Closely related to the three artists just
mentioned, although possessing a definite
personal impress and almost standing alone
in a style in which English influence can be
