DARLINGTON—VIENNA

Paris and Midi landscapes fully to per-
ceive what he has gained in that direction.
Although reminiscent of Cezanne, one
feels that he is no imitator and that his
attainments have all been primarily well
sifted in his own mind. Nor does he seek
immediate success, but pursues steadily in
his own way methods and means by which
he may achieve that which calls to the
artist in him, popularity or unpopularity
in result having little signification for him
as a goading or retarding thought along
the road he travels. In his studio in Dundee
one will find him always striving further to
enlarge his already sound sense of design
and expressive grasp of volume and colour ;
attainments which, with the hey-day of life
on his side, one feels will yet be his to enable
him to reveal still greater things. E. A. T.

Darlington.—The Darlington

Society of Arts has recently held an
exhibition of sketches done by members
during the summer months. One of the
aims of these autumn exhibitions is to
unearth latent talent and bring good work
to the notice of an industrial community
which otherwise might tend to underrate
the importance of art as a factor in human
happiness. Mr. Leonard Richmond,
R.B.A., R.O.I., speaking at a general meet-
ing of the Society, reviewed the members’
work very fully and gave a highly interest-
ing and helpful address dealing with the
essentials of landscape composition. a
