his studies in the Brera Academy of Milan
under the direction of the painters Ves-
pasiano Bignami and Camillo Rapetti; but
when promoted to the School of Painting
in that Academy he devoted himself to
animal life, and followed up the anatomy
of the horse and other animals in the
veterinary school. 0000
He soon obtained work as an illustrator
in the sporting papers, but a private mis-
fortune, in the loss of his wife, led him to
leave Italy and settle for a time in Paris.
Here he was busy for the “ Monde Illus-
tre ” and other journals, and in 1906 went
to Pierrefond in the Forest of Compiegne,
and for eight years followed the stag-hunts
in that forest, making constant studies and
arriving at his own technique, based on
quick studies and close observation, re-
fusing the help of the camera. Then came
in 1914 the Great War, which swept over
France; and the greater part of these

precious studies disappeared in this cata-
clysm, and have never been recovered, his
own home having been occupied by
German and French soldiers. 0 0

Vaccari is not only an animal artist. His
portrait studies in “ sanguigne ” had
success in the Paris Salon, notably in the
Italian “ Mostra” in the “Salon
d’Automne ” of 1910 ; and on his return
to Italy, where he is now definitely settled
in Genoa, he found many portrait com-
missions. But he followed up animal
painting—he excels in horses, cows and
dogs—in Sardinia, the Maremma and the
mountain valleys above Turin. He has
behind him those years of study in Com-
piegne, in which he noted closely the move-
ments of horses and even of dogs, and his
wish is to develop this experience on a
larger scale, and especially to give his
attention to the portraiture of the horse. A
