BASEL, Alfred, IX Althauplatz 5, Vienna.
Herr Alfred Basel is a decorative painter and designer of
mosaics, and has exhibited in Dresden and at the “Kunstschau,”
Vienna.

BAYES, Gilbert, 40 Boundary Road, St. John s Wood,
London.
One of the most successful of the younger school of Sculpture
in England, Mr. Gilbert Bayes is well known by his many
admirable works exhibited at the Royal Academy and other
important exhibitions. After winning a County Council
Scholarship for two years, he entered the Royal Academy
Schools and came under the influence of three of the most
distinguished sculptors of the day—Messrs. Brock, Bates, and
Frampton. Here he succeeded in wanning the Armitage
Prize, then the silver medal for the set of models from the
life, and finally, in 1899, the gold medal and the travelling
scholarship. He has been particularly successful with his
reliefs, and one of his most notable achievements in this
direction was the “ Assyrian Art ” bronze panel for the Sydney
Art Gallery (reproduced in The Studio for October, 1905, p. 86)
for which he was awarded a first prize of £50. Amongst
his recent important commissions are a portrait relief of
Professor Adamson for Glasgow University ; bronze of Sir
W. Moore for Bombay; bronze silver and lapis of Professor
Sidgwick for Newnham College ; bronze figure of St. Hugh
