designs from the art and literature
of the past, often from the mystic
writings and fables of the East, his
technique is entirely modern. He
has experimented with considerable
success in order to secure new
effects, and the latest result he has
obtained may be seen in the small
illustration, “ Sintram,” on this page.

Mr. Paterson claims that by this
process he can produce effects unat-
tainable by the use of enamel colour.
Moreover, the resultant effect is. im-
perishable, i.e., it is impervious to
atmospheric influence. In this method
the glass has different layers of colour,
“ flashed ” in the manufacture. The
effect can be varied by adopting

different plates of glass, and, after treatment, fusing them
together. There is, in a manner, a similarity of idea with
the three-colour printing process. Mr. Paterson has exe-
cuted several large windows by this method, and amongst
his other recent work may be mentioned the “first class”
glass work for the s.s. “Lusitania”; all the stained glass
for a church at Rawal Pindi, India, including a memorial
window for the “Seaforth Highlanders” ; the leaded
glass for the new extension of Victoria Station, Man-
chester ; and chancel windows for Bo’ness Church and
