WINDOW FOR PUBLIC LIBRARY DESIGNED
AND EXECUTED BY ANDREW STODDART
SUMNER, Heywood, Cuckoo Hill, South
Gorley, Fordingbridge, Hants.
In viewing the ecclesiastical work of Mr.
Heywood Sumner, whether it be a sgraffito
decoration for a wall, or a stained glass win-
dow, one is invariably impressed by the grace
and dignity of the design, and the delicate
beauty of the colour. He is familiar to
readers of The Studio through the reproduc-
tions of his work which have appeared in its
pages from time to time. His sgraffito deco-
rations were fully discussed in the April
number, 1898, by the late Mr. Gleeson White,
and several illustrations of his stained glass
and a decorative landscape panel appeared in
the February number, 1906. He is repre-
sented here by a wallpaper designed for Messrs.
Jeffrey & Co., and a reproduction in colour of
a cartoon for a three-light window for the
Church of St. Mar)7 the Virgin at Great War-
ley, Essex. This beautiful window was exe-
cuted by Messrs. James Powell & Sons. A
cartoon for another window for the same
church was illustrated in The Studio for
February, 1906. An arras tapestry—“The
Chase”—designed by Mr. Sumner and executed
by Messrs. Morris &Co. is reproduced on page
95 in the following section of this book. The
admirable decorative qualities which this beau-
tiful design possesses may be seen in the
illustration, but it is impossible in black-and-
white to do full justice to the original. It is,
without doubt, one of Mr. Sumner’s most suc-
cessful works in tapestry design.

STRACHAN, Alexander,
Windsor Place, Victoria Street,
Aberdeen, N.B.
Mr. Strachan is a designer of stained
and leaded glass and he has exe-
cuted several important commis-
sions both in Scotland and abroad.
Amongst these may be mentioned
memorial windows and other glaz-
ing for the Holburn Parish Church,
Aberdeen ; windows for the County
Hall, Aberdeen (one of which is re-
produced on page 71); a memorial
window for the Parish Church, Birsay, Ork-
ney ; windows for the New Standard Bank of
South Africa, Johannesburg, and other glaz-
ing for Messrs. Hey’s business premises in
Pretoria.
