M. Rene Lalique’s jewelry
is deservedly famous for its
artistic beauty and perfect
workmanship. He appears to
have inherited from his fore-
fathers the craftsmanship
which they followed with
such wonderful success, and
which has won the admira-
tion of the world. About four
years ago M. Lalique held an
exhibition of his work in the
Old Bond Street Galleries,
London, which was fully illus-
trated and discussed in The
Studio at the time. M. Gustav
Kahn contributed a short
introduction to the catalogue
of this exhibition, in which he
said: “ Thanks to M. Rene Lalique, the jewel-
ler’s art has been absolutely transformed. Before
his advent what was the jewel but a piece of
vain ostentation—a braggart boast, as it were,
of the possession of so much wealth ! Excel-
lent executants—whose taste was, however,
limited by the requirements of industrial art—
set the finest diamonds in the most dreary and
monotonous of designs .... Nor should it be
forgotten that M. Lalique has done much to
free the world from the all-pervading tyranny
of the diamond. Employing the brilliant only

when it is necessary for the harmony of his
design, he brought into prominence many
charming stones which had been forgotten by
