Perhaps 1. 3 is to be read ετών ξ·<, the letters ων having been added as an after-
thought. In that case, εζησεν έτα . . . is to be interpreted as some sort of a formula,
analogous to the common εζησευ καλώς.
588. Stele. Found standing in the ground at the east end of the same grave.
Height above the ground 42 cm.; width 35 cm. The top is rounded. Height of
inscription 27 cm. Height of letters 41/2_’51/s cm-> °f Φ ’n 1· L 10 cm.
Φαυστί'να Ούάλεντος ετ(ών) κζ/.
i. e. Faustina, {daughter} of Valens.
589. Stele. Found in the same cemetery, on a Mohammedan grave about 15
paces directly south of the moat surrounding the Castle. When seen by Dr. Schumacher in
1894, the slab was in the small ruined building near by, which is known as the Mazar
ish-Shekh Musa (see no. 597). Height at the left edge 74 cm., at the right 45 cm.;
average width 37 cm. Height of inscription 3 71/3 cm. Height of letters 51/g—7^ cm.

592. Blocks. Built into the walls of a modern house in the northwestern part
of the city, northwest of the Djami il-Khidr. Block a faces north, block b south.
Block a has been broken into two pieces; its right end is concealed by a cross-wall.
Length of a i, 1.33 m., distance from the end of A 11 to the cross-wall 1.02 m.;
length of Block b 2.26 m. Height of both blocks 43 cm. The letters are on a band
below a moulding. Height of letters in a 15 cm., in b io cm. Copied by Mr. Butler.
