943. Lintel. Two pieces of a lintel, found upon the ground, about 200 yards
north of the barracks. The pieces are 39^ cm. high: the first is 1.21m. long, the
second 42 cm. : together they complete the lintel, except for a small strip at the right end.
In the center is a cross in relief, 37 cm. broad, having the letters A and uu in the
lower angles, and, in the upper, five and six knobs respectively, these knobs being
arranged in the form of crosses. The inscription is in relief: the letters are 6]/2 to
8 cm. high. Copied by Dr. Littmann.

944. House. Two pieces of a lintel at the extreme northern side of the town.
In Mr. Butler’s opinion this lintel belonged to a private house. The larger piece, a,
is 2.27 m. long. The lower half of the face has been badly damaged, as if by fire:
it is complete on the left and broken at the right. In the center of the original block
was a disk inclosing a cross, and the letters UU and A in this order. On either side
of the disk is a bird, doubtless intended for a peacock, and above each bird there
appear to be two spears, crossed: all these objects are in relief. The smaller piece, b,
is 40 cm. long and 40 cm. high. It is broken at the left, and somewhat crumbled at
the right. The two pieces seem to complete the lintel. The inscription is in relief,
in three narrow plates on each side of the disk, sunk in the surface. The letters are
5, 7 and 9 cm. high. Only the first line is complete. Of the second line the first
two letters remain, and, at the end, five letters: there may have been one or two more
letters at the end of this line. Of the third line only three letters remain, at the end
of the line: there may have been one letter more after these. Drawn by Mr. Butler.

This reading is, of course, uncertain. It assumes that the first two lines on the
left of the disk are to be read first, then the first two lines on the right, and finally
the third line on both sides: also that cfis] stands for ωόΥ1 Compare the mutilated
