over the centre of Henan Province, on the
south bank of the Yellow River. Some sites of
the Peiligang Culture were found in the West
and North of Henan. The important sites
were at Peiligang, Egou (MH 1981), Shigu
(MCCRH 1987), Jiahu (MCCRH 1988) etc.
Most of these sites were located on the raised
land near the bank of the river. The area is
about 20,000 square metres. Some of the sites
cover only several thousand square metres.
The remains of the Peiligang culture include
dwelling houses, places for storing things,

tombs (Fig. 5), pottery-kilns, etc. and the rel-
ics included stone implements, pottery, bone
objects, and some ceramic statues of pigs,
sheep and people’s heads. In Jiahu site, some
symbols on the shells, bones and stone imple-
ments were found and many bone flutes were
unearthed which have seven holes and still
could be played (MCCRH, 1989). Traces of
millet and rice were found at some sites (WU
1983, Xue 1982, Zhang 1994), which showed
that people could plant rice about 8000 years
BP ago in the Yellow River Valley. By study-
