Wood of alder (Alnus sp.) from a paddle
shaped spade found in 1954 in the water-
logged valley in Blegind c. 12 km south of Ar-
hus in Jutland in connection with a Late Iron
Age built up road construction. The spade is
now 93.1 cm long and 7.1 cm broad. It had
been treated with bee’s wax and “dammar”
resin, which were extracted prior to dating.

cal.years 670 AD; 640-760 AD cal. ± 1 st.d.
Wood of oak (Quercus sp.). Sample from an
arrow shaped ard share found in Hoisted
brook during deepening operations in 1980 in
the vicinity of the church in Bramminge par-
ish, Ribe County, SW Jutland, Denmark. Its
length and width 54.4 cmx9 cm. The sample
had not been treated with preservatives when
it was dated. Sample 1305x1; Hg 25250 NM
VIII A 6553. Submitted by M. Lauenborg.
The find is in Esbjerg Museum, Mus.No.
1305x1. It is comparable with similar shares
from Samso and Northern Europe. (6 13C -
-27.3%o). (Lerche 1984, 26; Lerche 1985,
78-80; Lerche 1994, 36; Fries 1995, 200).

Part of a sole and beam of an ard made out of
a bifurcated branch (oak). It was found in
1978 by diving in Schermtitzelsee at Buckow
by Bollersdorf, Strausberg District, Branden-
burg, Germany. It was embedded in the lake
bottom at c. 9.5 m below water level. Total
length 102.5 cm, width 5-5.3 cm. Length of
beam 75 cm, length of sole 47.2 cm. Previ-
ously with wrong finding place and dating
(Early Iron Age and later 13th century)
