THE AMAZON, BY KISS OF BERLIN:
Thi; Colossal Group of tho Amazon attacked by a tigress, by Kiss of
Berlin, is one of tho miu'vels of tho Great Exhibition', and has received mora
tributes of unqualified praino than perhaps any uthev single object in tho
Crystal Palace. It is certainly a wry masterly production, and in a. style which
is almost new to sculptors of our day ; though at the same time, from the
nature of the subject, it is not entitled to rank with works in the highest
class of sculpture. It is moro animal than spiritual; the conception more
startling than poofcic. For tho Amazon, it is a figure of tremendous
energy, Tho manner in which she ia represented, ns having thrown herself

back out of her ordinary scat, in order to got beyond tho reach of j*
tiger, whoso claws arc already deep dug in the neck and flanks of tho hoj-';. F>,
whilst she takes deliberate aim for a single and critical blow at the bea" ^
the'savage monster, is admirably conceived and carried out; tho face fl'i
its mixed expression of terror and determination, is of it-self a study s"^ :
cientfor an entire work in sculpture. Tho horse and tiger are °°\ f
masterpieces-in their way, but unfortunately moro than divide tho '" j|~0 >
with the human subject. This work is a copy in zinc, bronzed, *"!'onl(TS
original in bronze, erected in 1S30, at tho foot of the steps before t
Museum at Berlin; having boon made a present io the King of Prussia "•
Society of Amateurs.
