protect the citizens from malady-inducing northem winds.

During the period of autonomy, the govemment of Cracow
modernized the city’s infrastructure. The communication and
water supply systems were improved, along with the street
lighting. Old hospitals and parks were renovated, and new
ones built.

The second half of the century meant a new bloom for
Cracow’s architecture. In place of the old fortifications all
