Graph of co-transmission of Der Arme Heinrich

The following graph shows the manuscript tradition of Der Arme Heinrich, and the co-transmission given in the multiple-text manuscripts.

The starting point for the graph is the paper by Fernández Riva / Millet 2022[a]. The data was taken from the Handschriftencensus, the manuscripts were provided with siglae corresponding to Der Arme Heinrich, and the work titles were partly simplified. The data was then processed with the software Gephi, the single text was selected (Der Arme Heinrich), the path of connections reduced to 2 steps (text – manuscript – co-transmitted text). After this, the data was transformed into a graph using the filter 'ForceAtlas 2' and the result manually adjusted to avoid overlapping of the nodes.

The graph shows the multiplicity of connections due to the fact that Der Arme Heinrich, as far as we can see, is only transmitted in multiple-text manuscripts dedicated to short narrative or discursive texts. In the upper part of the graph you can see manuscripts Ba and Bb, which share a considerable number of texts for the main reason the Bb mainly copied Bb. Still, each of these codices also have a number of texts not contained in the other one. You will find these texts to the left and to the right.

The lower part of the graph contains both the fragments and the lost Strassburg manuscript A, which again contained a collection of short stories. It may be noted that this codex contained only few texts which also appear in Ba and Bb: Rudolf von Ems' Barlaam, the anonymous Der Sperber and Konrad von Würzburg's Herzmäre (the latter only in Ba). These texts appear in the small central group of the most frequently co-transmitted texts, together with dicta from the Cato and Freidank groups.
