Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich

TheZentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich (Central Institute for Art History, ZI), founded in 1946/1947, is the only independent art historical research institute in Germany. The institute, located in the centre of Munich's art district at Königsplatz, is housed in the former NSDAP administrative building, where the American military government set up a central collecting point for the restitution of art looted by the Nazi regime in 1945. Since 1979, the ZI has been solely funded by the Free State of Bavaria and is a subordinate institution of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art. The ZI is a central service institution and offers an excellent research environment for art historical research with one of the world's most important and largest art history libraries, the extensive image collections of its photothek, numerous online offers and databases, as well as a rich programme of public academic events.
