Women and art in the colonial period, modern art
AND CONTEMPORARY TIMES IN MEXICO, PERU AND BRAZIL - INTRODUCTION

A currently presented volume is the sixth edition of the annual “Latin
American Art”, prepared by the Department of Central and South American
Art, operating within the Polish Institute of World Art Studies. It is a continua-
tion of the previous volume and it deals with problems related to female issues
in the context of visual arts. The papers refer to both an aspect of presence of
women in art and existence of artistic objects that have beem created on the in-
itiative of female donors as well as all artistic activities undertaken by women.
The time frames cover the period from the colonies to modernity. Geographi-
cally prevailing areas are Mexico and Peru. Within the collection there is also
one article on contemporary Brazilian art.
The presented volume is divided into two parts. The first one, devoted to
the colonial period, consists of three papers. In the article by Mercedes Pérez
Vidal, titled “Art and Heritage of the Dominican Order in Peru and New Spain
