1609, defliné ci'abord par fon père à la profeffion de tailleur
d'iiabits, fut mis enfuite chez un orfèvre où fon coufin Louis
remarqua fes aptitudes pour le deffin. Après avoir étudié le?
ouvrages des grands maîtres fous la direction de Louis & d'Au-
guflin, fon frère, il fut chargé de la décoration de la Galerie du
cardinal Farnefe qui lui coûta huit années de travail. 11 en fut
récompenfé non comme un artifte qui venait de faire honneur
par fes rares talents à l'humanité &. à fa patrie, mais comme un

The Caracci family gave birth to feveral diflinguifhed artifts.
Annibal Caracci, a painter, born in Bologna f 1560), died in the
year 1609, intended by his father to be a tailor, was afterwards
placed at a goldfmith's, where his coufin Louis firil noticed bis
aptnefs for drawing. After having ftudied the works of the
mafters under the direction of Louis and his brother Augußin,
he was confided with the décoration of the cardinal Farnefe's
Gallery, which coft him eight years' labour. His reward was
much lefs that of an artift, whofe uncommon talents were an
honour to humanity and his country, than that of a workman
more mefured than appreciated. That kind of contempt grieved
him very much : he died fhortly afterwards. The collection of
his Works of the Farnefe gallery lias been reproduced with ta-
lent by the engraver Cefius. The fubjeél of the rnedallion we
give to-day is : Apollo ßinning the Jatyr Marfyas.
