Cette eftampe, qui remonte aux premiers temps de la gra-
vure au burin en Italie, elt d'une infigne rareté & paffe avec
la Bacchanale à la cuve pour un des chefs-d'œuvre d'Andréa
Mantegna (Andrea di Mantova), l'on auteur 1426-1 bob). Elle
elt exécutée dans la manière des premiers ellais de gravure
des orfèvres florentins, & intérefle autant par la noblelVe du
delfin que par la lïmplicité de l'exécution. — S'il nous était
permis de hafarder une opinion toute perlonnelle, la figure
de droite ne repréfenterait pas laint Paul, mais l'empereur
Conftantin : la compolition deviendrait ainfi un fymbole de
la conftitution politique du moyen âge & figurerait l'Empire

This print, which was created in the firft years of Italian
llroke engraving, is a great rarity, and with the Bacchanal
isconfidered as one of the malter-piecesof Andrea Mantegna
(Andrea di Mantova), its author (i420-i5o5). Its exécution
reminds us of the Florentine goldlmiths'firlt ellays on engra-
ving, and interefls as much by the majefty of the delïgn, as
by the plainnels of the exécution. —We hère beg leave to
exprels our own opinion as to the armed perfonage which
we mean for the emperor Conftantine. The i'ubjeft, the com-
position thus becomes a fymbol of the middle age's political
conftitution and fhows us the Empire and the l'apacy efla-
