ANTIQUES. — Céramique grecque. ANTEFIXE

Les Aniéfixes étaient des ornements de pierre ou de terre
cuite fervant à indiquer, dans la décoration extérieure des
Temples anciens, la place & la tête des couvre-joints (paral-
lèles & également diftants), des dalles de marbre ou de terre
cuite qui formaient la couverture du toit. Leur place natu-
relle était donc fur la cimaife qui terminait l'entablement de
la face latérale des édifices. Cette difpofition avait pour effet
de rompre la monotonie de la grande ligne horizontale qui
terminait ces faces, les pignons triangulaires des deux autres
faces indiquant les pentes du toit.

Les nombreufes applications de la Polychromie 1 à la dé-
coration extérieure des monuments de l'ancienne Grèce durent
faire rechercher dès les temps les plus reculés la production
en terres cuites, recouvertes d'émaux, de cette forte d'orne-
ments qui fe répétaient toujours en grand nombre & du
même modèle fur un même édifice. Celui que nous donnons
eft exécuté en trois tons : noir, vermillon & jaune vif. (Gran-

The Antefixes were u(ed to mdicate in ihe exterior déco-
ration of ancient Temples the place and head of the joint-co-
verings (running parallel and equallydiftant) from themarble
tlag Hönes, or the tiling whichformed the cover of theroof.
Their natural place was then on the cymatium which termi-
nated the entablature of the lateral front of édifices. This
difpofition had the advantage of relieving the monotony de-
riving from the horizontal line which terminated thele fronts
(the triangulär gable-ends of the two other faces indicated
the flop of the roof). — The numerous applications of Poly-
chrom}' < to tlie exterior décoration of ancient Greek monu-
ments caufed the productions of enamelled clay to be in
favour from the remoteft times, and efpecially for thefe Or-
naments which want to be offen repeated and of the fame
nature on the fame édifice. The one we give here is executed
in three colours : black, vermillion and clear yelow. (Execu-
