La ville de Colmar fut la réfidence du peintre graveur
Martin Schœngauer dit Martin Schœn ou le beau Martin
(1420-1488), l'un des artiites les plus distingués de l'Ecole
allemande au xve fiècle. Elle lui élève à ce titre, au milieu
du préau du couvent des Vnterlinden, dont elle a converti les
bâtiments en Mutée d'art & en Bibliothèque publique, un
monument commémoratif, conçu par M. Aug. Eartholdi,
dans le (lyle ogival rhénan de l'époque. La rtatue représente
le Maître, auquel on attribue l'invention de la gravure au
burin en Allemagne, examinant une planche giavée dont il
vient de tirer une épreuve ; les figurines du piédeftal sont des
perfonnifications de la Peinture, de la Gravure, de l'Etude &
de l'Orfèvrerie. {Inédit.)

The city of Colmar was the refidence of the painter and
engraver Martin Sehcengaucr or the handfvme Martin
(1420-1488), one of the moft diftinguilhed artifls of the
German School during the xv1'1 Century. The city ereéls in
the centre of the yard of Vnterlinden Convent, the buildings
ofv>hich have been converted into an artiflical mufeum and
a public library, a commemorative monument compofed by
Mr. Aug. Bartlwldi, in the Rhenifh ogive ftyleof the epoch.
The flatue reprefents the Mafler, to v>hom the invention of
ftroke engraving in Germany is attributed, examining an en-
