Henri Aldegrave (Aldegroever ou Altgraf), né à Soefl, en Wefl-
phalie, en i 502, mort vers 1562, efl claffé au premier rang des
Petits Maîtres, génération de graveurs allemands, la plupart élèves
d'Albert Durer, &. qui n'ont produit que des pièces de petite di-
menfion. — Celle-ci fait exception à la règle : c'efl une des pièces
capitales du maître; elle reproduit le bufle de Bernard Knipper-
dollinck, l'un des douze ducs ou apôtres du chef des Anabap-
tifles, du fameux prophète Jean de Leyde. Cette roàle phyfionomie
eft empreinte d'une remarquable expi'effion de candeur &. de
loyauté. Ce révolutionnaire utopifte périt écartelé après la prife

Henry Aldegrave (Aldegrrever or Allgraf) was boni in Soefl, a
Weftplialian city, during the year 1502, and died towards 1562.
He is placed among the firfl of the Utile Maßers, a génération
of German engravers, for the mofl fcholars of Albert Durer, and
who have produced but works of fmall dimenfions. The pre-
fent plate is an exception to this rule. It is one of the mafter's
capital pièces and reproduces the buft of Bernard Knipperdollincl}
one of the twelve dukes or apoflles of the Anabaptift prophet
Jean de Leyde. A remarkable candor and loyalty pervades this
manly face. In 1555, after the taking of Munfler, this revolu-
