Les Parterres de Compartiment diffèrent de ceux de Broderie
(p. 53) en ce que, dans une même pièce, le deffin fe répétait
fymétriquement dans les quatre fens. Ils étaient mêlés de maffifs
& pièces de gazon, d'enroulements U de plates-bandes de fleurs
avec de la broderie de buis en petite quantité. Les sentiers,
fablés de différentes couleurs (fables jaune &. rouge, ciment, bri-
que pilée, mâchefer ou terre noire), ne recevaient pas les pro-
meneurs; ils ne fervaient qu'à détacher lés pièces de comparti-
ment.

Le Parterre ci-dessus, emprunté à la Theorie & Pratique du
Jardinage (Paris, Jombert, 1722) & delfiné par l'architecte
Leblond pour un emplacement carré, eft des plus magnifiques.
11 se compofe de quatre cartouches de broderie (buis) avec des
coquilles de gazon aux quatre angles, le tout sablé de couleur &.
brodé d'un trait de buis. Le baffin du milieu eft entouré d'une
plate-bande coupée, garnie d'ifs &. d'arbrisseaux avec des pots de
fleurs pofés fur des dés de pierre. Le bas du Parterre eft fou-
tenu par un talus de gazon, bordé haut & bas d'un rang de
caiffes & d'ifs, avec un efcalier de pierre dans le milieu, orné
de figures &. de vafes.
