XVIIe SIÈCLE. — travail espagnol. MEUBLES. — COFFRE AVEC ARMATURE EN FER
(COLLECTION DE M. DE MONBRISON. ) support en bois.
t,e panneau principal de ce coffre s'abat sur des coulisses
attenantes au pied ; il n'est donc pas nécessaire de descendre le
coffre, de le mettre à terre pour l'ouvrir. La forme du meuble
est rectangulaire et sans aucune moulure. Tout le mérite et l'in-
térêt consistent dans le beau travail de l'entrée de la serrure,
dans les poignées ornées, dans les penturcs découpées et les
bordures si délicates qui préservent et renforcent les angles. Le
pied, il faut le dire, contribue aussi considérablement à donner
à l'ensemble du meuble un caractère auquel nous no sommes
pas habitués et qui rappelle d'autres usages que les nôtres.
Ces sortes de meubles se plaçaient dans les appartements et
s'adossaient au mur, comme l'indiquent les traverses inférieures
du pied ornées seulement sur la face principale.

The principal panel of tliis coffer si ides dow.i along some grooves
which are adapted to its foot; and so it is not required to take
down the chest and place it on the ground in order to open it.
This pièce of houschold furniture is rectangularly shaped and
without mouldings. Its whole merit and interest consistin the fine
workings of thelock's opening, in the ornated handles, in the eut ou t
iron-work and in the so délicate borders which défend and streng-
then the angles. The foot, too, we must say, contributes to a great
extent to give the ensemble of that pièce of work a character to
which we are not accustomed and which calls to mind other
uses than ours. The objects of that kind were put in inhabited
rooms, their hacks against the wall, as shown by the lower cross-
bars of the foot, which are only ornamented on the front-side.
