a great many sculpted
altar-screens, painted
and gilt, whereon are
represented diverse
scènes of Ghrist's life
and passion. Generally
those monuments of art
and of iconography are
rather overstocked with
personages, as the
sculptor never hesitat-
ed adding to the num-
ber of figures which he
thought necessary to
therenderingof a scène
or épisode of his. To us
those works are assur-
edly of precious ac-
count, we must add,
forhousehold furniture
and costumes, as ail
their personages are
strictly dressed accord-
ing to the fashion of
the epoch, with the
greatest correctness
and a real perfection.
The présent suliject is
the Présentation in the
temple and comprises
thirteen personages in
varied attitudes. As for
the furniture, a read-
ing-desk, round which
young clerks aregroup-
ed, deserves attention
by its shape. An altar
with screen is seen,
too, in thebackground.

Les artistes flamands du xve siècle avaient une sorte de pré-
dilection pour les objets et meubles de cette sorte en bois sculpté ;
et c'est en très-grand nombre que l'on rencontre encore au-
jourd'hui, soit dans les églises, soit dans les musées ou les
collections particulières, des retables sculptés, peints et dorés,
où sont représentées diverses scènes de la passion et de la vie du
Christ. Dans ces monuments d'art et de science iconographique

les personnages sont le plus souvent prodigués; le sculpteur
n'hésite jamais devant le nombre de figures nécessaires au rendu
d'une scène, d'un épisode.

Pour nous modernes, il faut dire que ces couvres nous sont
de précieux renseignements au point de vue du mobilier et des
costumes, car tous les personnages sont vêtus de costumes du
temps, traités avec la plus scrupuleuse exactitude et une véri-

table perfection. Le sujet ci-dessus est la présentation au temple,
composée de treize personnages d'attitudes très-variées. Bn fait
de meubles, un lutrin, autour duquel se groupent de jeunes
clercs, mérite pour sa forme d'attirer l'attention. Un autel avec
retable se voit dans le fond.

Le meuble entier, doré et couvert de vernis, est colorié par
place.
