A un excellent parti pris d'ensemble se joint une certaine
confusion de détails qui vient nuire à l'objet entier. On peut
supposer que ce trop riche cadre est un de ces chefs-d'œuvre
de maîtrise comme il s'en fit tant pendant les deux derniers
siècles. L'auteur a voulu, semble-t-il, faire quelque chose de
très-remarquable : il y est parvenu, mais quant à l'exécution
seulement.
Les sujets du centre sont peints.

We see here with an excellent conception of ensemble a cer-
tain confusion of the détails which is prejudicial to the whole
object. One may suppose tins rather too rich frame is one of the
trial pièces for the mastership, such as so many were executed
in the two last centuries, lt seems the artist was attempting to
make something very remarkable and has sucreoded but in the
exécution.
The central subjects are painted.
