RH YTONS EN TERRE
A MM. CASTELLANI ET FEUARDENT.
Les grecs désignaient
sous le nom de Rhyton
(puràv) une simple corne de
bœuf percée à l'extrémité,
et qui servait de coupe k
boire. Plus tard on étendit
ce nom à des coupes de
terre ou de métal, qui
offraient à peu près la
forme d'une corne, et qui
étaient percées à leur bout
inférieur comme le rhyton
primitif.
En général les rhytons
représentaient, comme on
peut le voir par les dessins
ci-contre, des figures hu-
maines, et plus souvent
des figures d'animaux; ils
étaient parfois décorés de
peintures.

The Greeks gave tlie
naine of Hhyton (pVtèv) to
a plain bull's horn, liaving
a liole at its small end, and
whicb served for a drinking
cup. In later times, tbat
dénomination was exteud-
ed to carthen or metallic
cups, which nearly pre-
sented the form of a liorn
and wbich were pierced
uith a bole at their lower
extremity, like the primi-
tive rhyton.
Generally speaking, those
rhytons bore, as in the op-
posite drawings, repré-
sentations of human heads,
and oftener of animais;
they soraetimes were de-
corated with paintings.
