Palissy was more particularly a designer and an enameller.
Ile sculpturod and modelled very little, we believe : for the
most part he merely modelled the smallest animais, reptiles et
foliage with which he decorated bis pièces, and did not always
even take the trouble to retouch them with the boaster. In the
salt-cellar given above, the décoration borrows nothing from
natural history; Palissy bas dracon upon the forms, ornaments,
and détails of architecture, and it must be admitted that he lias
made excellent use of ail he bas borrowod from that source.
